A Finite Summer

Summer makes Firecreek feel infinite. The garden outpaces us. Insects multiply into a hum you can hear from the porch. Every week brings a new baby something — a fawn in the tall grass, moths thick around the porch light, chicks that seem to double overnight. But 65 acres is 65 acres. It doesn't grow because the season is generous. What changes is how much life it can hold at once. Buddhist and Hindu tradition share an old image: Indra's Net, a web stretching infinitely in every direction, a jewel at each crossing point, each jewel reflecting all the others. Every jewel is small and fixed. Yet the net is infinite, because nothing exists apart from everything else. Firecreek feels like one of those jewels this time of year — finite, holding the reflection of something larger. A cicada waits years underground for one finite summer.

A plant sets hundreds of seeds knowing only a few take root. Nothing here waits for a guarantee before it grows — it just grows, trusting the season is enough. Growth was never about getting bigger than the land. It's about how much life a finite place can hold.
